Subject: 1990 Multivan with noise in front

I know it's Friday but I have a technical question and I have a feeling that the outcome isn't going to be fun at all. ($$$)

I've owned my 90 Multivan since early 2002 and this list helped me as through the "early years" and then over a year ago, my van was stolen. Fortunately, it was recovered in about a week and without a lot of damage. This list helped me get the parts I needed to put it back together. Now, I've come to a third stage of van ownership - my 18 year old son thinks it's his car! Actually, he loves the car and treats her well; as well as an 18 year old male can, I guess. But he's oblivious. Yesterday and today, I drove it for the first time in a long while to get it smogged. (That was an adventure in itself. The mechanic couldn't locate the "notch" to check the timing and the gas cap didn't pass.) But I did start noticing a noise...and so here are the symtoms:

It is a deep hum that seems to be coming from the driver's front wheel well area. I feel a slight vibration that accompanies it. I don't hear it/feel it under about 25 mph and it does get a bit louder as I accelerate. I definitely hear it/feel it when I am veering to the left and not to the right. (over 25) I don't hear or feel anything when I slow down to make a turn or when I'm maneuvering at low speeds. (Backing up/U-turns)

I have a mechanic who I, mostly, trust but I'd appreciate some learned speculation so I prepare my mind and wallet! Thanks for any input.

Debra
