look at the face of your radio.
if here is a 'key' icon on it ..
it's a code radio.
if you have a code radio and you remove power from it for more that a few
seconds ..
you know it for sure when you reconnect power - it won't do anything,
until you enter a four digit code properly.
'some' of them have a code of 1-1-1-1 .
On my 93 eruovan ..
the PO"s were kind enough to leave the business card size card that came
with the van, telling the four digit radio code..
and come to think of it ..
i've had no battery in that van for months at a time, and the radio just
works again when a battery is installed .
????
explain me that batman.

This whole business seems really bizarre. Is it really of some benefit in
preventing the radio from being stolen? It isn't that marvelous a radio,
anyway, and stealing it would not be something to be done in a couple of
minutes.
At any rate, this radio locking must not apply to all Vanagons. I have had
the battery out or disconnected on several occasions, and the radio has
never gone into this mode. Should I look for something that must be not
working properly, or should I be thankful that this particular "improvement"
is missing from my camper?
