Michael, you did not find him raping your wife. I understand your feeling of violation. But, you found that your van had been looked through, with evidently nothing taken, nothing damaged. Your damage deterrent of leaving the doors unlocked to prevent someone breaking the windows to get in worked. Shooting someone is a pretty strong response to a petty crime. Typically such crimes are committed by children if in a middle class neighborhood, or by homeless folks just hoping to get by in less swanky locations.
I've had my disagreements with Jake, but I hope your response that your are going to sleep in your van with a weapon at ready was a bit of hyperbole due to the feeling of invasion of the moment. I hope that with time, a cooler emotion might prevail.
