Every Porsche 914 I've owned (20+) exhibited the same symptom after
about 25K miles. The cure was to lubricate the solenoid then it was good
for another 25K miles.
I've never experienced that condition on any of the Vanagons I've owned
(20+).
Since your mechanic says the wires are getting hot if the starter is
actuated it seems it is trying to do its job.
If you had trans work done when the starter was replaced another
possibility from left field. It could be end play. If the flexplate has
been changed without properly adjusting for enough end play it could be
the thrust shims are to thick and seize the engine as things expand with
heat. An easy way to check for this condition is to manually try to turn
the engine by hand when the starter exhibits the condition again.

I do not agree but, he says he can fix it by reworking the starter by grinding away some of the casting so that it fits deeper in so it is away from the place it usually sits on the fly wheel teeth. Anyway, I call him to day and he says it didn't fix it. Surprise, surprise lol He said he added some more ground straps. One at the battery to the body and another at the neg post on the starter it self. He says that has hel[ped but it still is not cranking over the engine when it is hot. Does fine when it's cold.

Could a starter from a diesel automatic help here. Their is no reason for this problem. I never had a problem with this car until they replaced the old starter which died a month ago.
