Unless you have the chassis of the van connected to an in earth ground rod
or connected to a grounded conductor through a 110V connection the chassis
connection points really are not "grounds". Now here is where things get
strange. In the battery electrons flow from the positive to negative plates.
As everything is really a series circuit outside the battery the electrons
actually flow from negative to positive. So the chassis is really the source
and the wiring brings all those electrons back to the positive side of the
battery.

To make all DC electrical stuff learn Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws, learn to
use and interpret a meter and most things DC electrical will make sense.

A not long ago, Mark Drillock kindly educated me on ground importance.
It's so easy to discount the lowly ground. It takes 2 to tango.

Not to get off track (What? me?), but re-doing grounds may have
improved things for my conversion.

Zoltan: if you need to establish a new ground, be sure to get past the
gray primer. I found that in poor light, it can look like you're down
to metal but you're only down to grey primer.

Given your body work etc., I'm bet you know this, but posted anyway.     :)
