Yeah, I grew up with the old style schematics in late 50s thru the 70s. Seemed simpler when I first looked at a Track Wiring Diagram. But if I was going to continue owning 73-later VWs, I made the effort to learn and found in many ways they were great to use and diagnosis of parts were much easier, especially on L-Jet, Digijet and Digifant fuel management systems

The problem with "conventional" schematic symbols of 30 to 50 years ago is that they don't translate into the newer devices used on vehicles in the past 20 to 28 years or so - it's called progress I guess. In addition, literally more miles of wire and cable is present than in your mid 60s or 70s VW (or Detroit Iron for that matter). To do a schematic in the old fashion way could run 20 to 30 pages, verses the several pages using the Track Wiring Diagram.

As Scott said, they are quite good and once you know your way around them, they're so much simpler than the "vintage" schematics of yore.....
