the obvious way to get the old windshield  out when you know you are
replacing the seal is cut the old seal with a sharp razor knife.
then it comes out very easily without much chance of damage at all.
Like no windshield skills needed to do that at all.

reminds me of the little girl who suggested to let the air out of the tires
of the stuck-under-the-bridge-truck, when the cops and tow truck people
didn't think of that obvious solution.
