Subject: Lockers -- how hard to install LLSD?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"

I'm going to be taking 2WD Mellow Yellow to the shop to get the tranny lowered so a Gowesty external ATF cooler can be installed. Considering the three (3!) times I got stuck last year (a soupy gravel-in-mud soil, a sandy soil on a steep slope, and deep soft cinders on a highway shoulder) I'm not in the least enamored with the full-slip differential my van is outfitted with.* A locking limited slip differential (LLSD) may have made a substantial difference in at least one of those three cases, maybe all three. Not being an idiot would also help, but at the age of 61 I've decided that idiocy is simply something I have to live with, while hardware can be changed.

How difficult is it to pull the differential and install another? Transmission shop work only (I see that Daryl at AA Transaxle can do it. But he's all the way up near Seattle), or can your general mechanic handle it?

========== * A syncro would be nice but let's be realistic here. For the same amount of money I could get the master bedroom remodeled which would make Mrs Squirrel a darn sight happier than if I bought a van. Happy wife, happy life -- my motto. -- Rocky J Squirrel '84 Westfalia: Mellow Yellow ("The Electrical Banana") '74 Westrailia: (Ladybug Trailer company, San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) Bend, OR KG6RCR
