Thanks all for the input! After thinking about it, I think the easiest at this point is to do as Loren and Troy suggested - I'll go for a 3-4" topper from Costco or some such place. If I get ambitious in the future I'll redo the bench with some nicer foam, but I suspect the topper will make it comfortable enough. The only problem with the topper is the room it will take up. I'm finding that there is not a lot of storage room with the engine in back and all - I'll be changing that with the addition of some storage boxes behind the two front seats. I have an idea of making them stacked so they can convert to a bench/cot across the space behind the front seats. As to medicinal help - be it beer or melatonin...well, that takes care of the symptoms, not the problems.
