The Syncro transmission really is the 5 speed with really low reverse and
forward creeper along with the shaft extension to run the front axle. A
taller R/P is what makes all the gears taller in the two wheel drives. While
the TDI does make good torque at lower speeds you both torque and speed to
make horsepower and at speed you need horsepower to overcome wind
resistance. Also keeping the engine under that torque stress increases NOx
emissions and probably will even shorten it's life.
As for rubber gearing a lot can be changed by tire size although 15" wheels
and room in the wheel wheels can be limiting. Dont look at the change in
diameter but rather the change in circumference or use the revolutions per
mile charts.
Avoid the temptation to gear the TDI down too low.

The word was that the taller R&Pšs were NLA pretty much. I donšt know about
the problems getting going. The TDI has serious low end torque. But the
brakes? I have G60s in the front and Audi 5000 turbo rear disks in the back
so I should be good.
The real answer is the 5 speed transmission but I donšt have the courage to
ask how much one of those is. Do they fit in syncros?
