Hi Ralph, Finally a question I can answer.   First , if you haven't run this heater before, make sure you are outiside a building , parked on pavement or dirt, not over dry grass, etc. , as it may smoke/or emit sparks, especially if a rodent has made a nest inside the heat exchanger. Also make sure the cold air return isn't blocked under the rear bench seat..   The timer runs the heater about ten minutes. The more you turn the knob clockwise, the more heat.   The heater is designed for driving, and warming the car up before you drive away on cold days, but not for extended stationary use. The reason is the battery in yiou car will be dead in about a hour or two of full time use, and the heater itself won't nrun very well once the battery voltage drops below 12.5 Volts.   If you havce dual batteries, you can go for longer periods, but they are noisy and smokey .     Robert
