re Intake assembly before the air filter canister that traps dust/firt. Clear plastic, that is slanted so the dirt tends to settle in the deeper end. snaps off with the metal retainer so it can be emptied.

It's only on syncro vans. Though one can be fitted to a 2WD 2.1 waterboxer vanagon easily.

it's a 'swirl pre-filter' ...by swirling the air with internal fins ...it causes large particles, pebbles, sand, etc. to be swirled outwards so they fall out of the air entering the main air box....and collect in a clear plastic bowl that you empty once in a while. It keeps that junk from even getting to the main paper air filter element at all.

I have one extra one I might sell. they're a slick device.
