I recently did this job on my Bluestar--it's not fun, but I don't remember too many special tools, except for some long needlenose pliers for the annoying VW hose clamps (which I did not re-use) and a long 6mm allen wrench that I had to cut down the short end to clear one of the bolts. You'll also want to replace the oil pressure sending units and a bunch of little hoses while you're in there. This is a job that takes patience and planning more than anything.
