Acetic acid (strong vinager) or citric acid will give similar results as muriatic acid (concentrated HCl), but with a little less toxicity. They can still burn, but the straight stuff from the store (20% acetic acid if you can find agricultural vinager -- try an agricultural supply store) or citric acid crystals (sold by restaurant supply vendors or online from bulkfoods.com) is nicer to work with than is muriatic acid. mcneely
