I doubt tires alone will get a 25 % raise in gearing overall..
perhaps 15 % , but not 25 % .
you would have to go from a 26 inch outer diameter tire to a ( 26 plus 1/4th
of 26 ) 33 1/2 inch diamter tire ....which would be on the pretty extreme
end of the scale for how tall a tire you can fit to a vanagon.
if the trans is good ..
or even still installed..
I sure would not be modifying the trans gear until I had the engine in hand
that I'm going to use ..
and even then ...
it's a long road from buying a good used TDI engine and all the associated
parts needed with it, plus conversion parts, plus wiring harness work and
all that ..it's a *long* way yet to having the running engine that's going
to power your van evenutally .
I'm put my energy into the getting 'the' engine myself..
that is the 'biggest busted thing' that you don't currenty have, that you do
need.
seems silly to me to invest time and energy into trans gearing or even tires
when you're not up to a running van anyway.
one of my conversion sayings is ..
"fix the busted stuff first. " The stuff that is not working at all, that's
missing entirely etc.
lots of people pour money in to parts and conversion this-n-that's etc..
and never finish the project ..
then they sell it as a dead project van with a bunch of new parts in boxes
..
( which is helpful to the buyer, since they usually are not getting their
full price back out of the accumulated and never-used project parts ) ..
You can find non-running 'restorable' cars all day long that come with a
garage full of never-used, and never will get to use, parts.
I'm sure you get my drift.
And why worry about the trans or tires when you don't even have the engine
you are going to use ??
that's where the energy should go right now.
that alone can be a big enough trick to pull off well anyway.
