I'm not too happy with the stock shift points either. I like to be
conservative on the throttle and the thing will be in 3rd gear at
about 20 mph. I think that in the early 80's there was a bias toward
hitting some fuel mileage target, and the shift points are "pointed"
in that direction. Ever drive a Omni/Horizon from that era? I know
they had VW engines, but was the tranny a VW? They were a good
example of why people thought US carmakers could not make a good
small car. They shifted into a rather high 3rd gear very early to
get better mpg. Then if you wanted to accelerate, push the pedal,
nothing, little harder, nothing, little harder, nothing, hit the
kickdown and WAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! the engine is screaming. I remember
an early review of the 2.1 vanagon w/ auto trans. Seems like it was
from a TV show. They talked about how you really need to use the
shifter to keep it in 2 longer in order to have good performance in
around town driving. I've been known to do that at times when I know
I will want to accelerate and know I won't need 3rd gear.
Being in a higher gear sooner means more "slip" in the torque
converter, which means more heat there. Here's something I've long
wondered: How much fluid exchanges from the AT to the torque
converter in operation? It doesn't seem like there is much space to
send the fluid out and back through that coaxial spinning shaft
apparatus. So how much heat from the TC ends up back in the main AT
body to go through the cooler?
That warning about the governor mod affecting the pressure in the
whole trans seems odd. Seems like it would just change some control
pressure that would trigger action in the valve body to make it shift?
