Regarding the modified governor that I have installed into my auto trans Westy, I've received a couple emails from listees wanting to know more ($, etc.) and I'm referring them to German Transaxle for that. Robert Mac Dowell forwarded a pretty fuzzy jpg of a page detailing the "Kennedy" modification, which is the same as what GTA did to the governor. There is an advisory on the page: "The disadvantage of making this modification on water cooled Vans is that the higher RPM causes higher oil operating pressure that can fail the trans cooler. When this happens the trans becomes contaminated with water and the radiator is contaminated with trans fluid. I ruined three VW coolers before I replaced the cooler with an aluminum block and hoses to a common aftermarket air-cooled transmission cooler." He then moves on to describe his adapter/bypass block and connections to the external cooler. It looks similar to the Gowesty setup. Another note bothers the heck out me: "For light duty, highway use, [this] is adequate. When using this, avoid very heavy slow traffic or long slow mountain roads where torque converter slippage produces a lot of heat." Drat. It is exactly for that reason -- long slow mountain roads -- that I pasted on this Gowesty ATF cooler. Well, at the least the stock ATF cooler has been removed so it's not at risk of damage due to the described higher oil pressure caused by the governor modification. And the hoses presently connected to the GW cooler could probably be connected to a different type of cooler more suited to these long slow mountain roads that I find myself climbing.
