Also, you can hear the flame "rumbling" if you put your ear to the outside vent. This is helpful if you don't want to go through the ritual of trying to see the flame in the little sight glass during the daytime (bad enough at night) and/or you don't want to wait long enough for the vent to get warm so you can go do something else.
