Great pics Alistair.

As shown in the diagram, if one is feeling adventurous, the U joint (later style transmission) does come apart and can be greased. Mine have a *little* play but the shift linkage is still pretty tight. IIRC some of the vendors sell those parts.

And a small caution. I installed a new transmission shift lever boot. It cracked very quickly. Pretty sure it wasn't installer error. Just suggesting that even if one has a boot that looks a bit old, it may out last a new one.
