Look underneath your beast, you'll see it's pretty hefty. You'll also see that it's what keeps the whole arrangement from folding up when you put the brakes on (and the rest of the time as well), and controls toe-in (or -out). When you replace those deteriorated rubber doughnuts, be prepared to discover ugly rust in the bushing that sets spacing between the two metal endplates.
