My vote is for coat hanger wire. Tried #14 Loomex recently. Stiffer is better.

Pull the vent cover. I got desperate and used a flashlight duct taped to that opening, and dental mirror, to see where my fish wire was hanging up.

If using a string, maybe attach a small weight? Fishing lead?
