hi .. they seldom fail in my experience. Maybe you'll find the wire off.

on that tin piece.. I like to be able to get it off easily. ( you may find yourself removing the oil filter to help access ) . it's attached at the top by brackets that are held by the exhaust mounting bolts or nuts.

A nut on a stud is nice to work with ..easy to heat the nut etc. If the engine is assembled per stock, there will be one exhaust nut on a stud, and one exhaust bolt .. those bolts often get stuck in the head badly.

my tricks for making it easier to put back on and take off in the future include ... cut the bolt hole in the bracket/tab with a hack saw...so it's just an open U shape .. then you don't need to totally remove the nut or bolt to get the tin off ..just loosen it some.

and since there are two bolts on the bottom ... I often only use one of the upper mounting tabs. Like cut the other one off. Any time you don't have to mess with rusted exhaust fasteners..that's good. If you make the end of the tab U shaped and open .. and only use the tab that is under a nut , then it's real easy to remove that tin piece when needed.

Indeed it is brown. Wraps up the front of the L head, under the fuel rails, twists a couple times around that bunch of grounding wires that bolt to the head, then hits a little connector and turns into the blue/black wire.

Speaking of tips, ALL the wires look brown with a thin coating of central Oregon dust on them. A bit of Windex (all I had) washes them and the colors pop out.

Well, THERE'S your problem. The oil pressure lamp on the dash does not come on because the op switch does not close with no oil pressure. Short that blue/black wire to frame and Hey Presto! the lamp comes on.

I gotta pull the tin anyway, wonder what I'll find. Those pressure switches fail much?
