They get frozen in place sometimes. I have had the rod twist into 2 pieces when I try real hard to make the nut turn. Then that whole cable/rod assembly needs to be replaced, though the threaded end can be repaired if need be. Changing the cable is not too bad on a Syncro but the fuel tank is in the way on 2wd models.
