Ultimately the wire goes to the sensor between the 2 inner push rod tubes on the drivers side. You will have to remove that tin to replace the sensor or that wire. The wire does start from above the engine and it is common for it to cut by the tin or burned from the exhaust pipe. On the watercooled 1.9L ('83, 84) vanagon, can the oil pressure switch wire (blue with black stripe, bentley p. 97.56, current track number 29) be accessed from the top of the engine compartment, and if so, where the dickens is it?
