Okay, yeah, that's what I thought. So I needn't think that I was
destroying a valuable heritage item if I chop them off to 2'' and plug
'em.

Funny you should mention that. Last summer mine developed a crack, and I
paid mightily for a fancy machined aluminum replacement part. THAT
sucker will never break.
Changing subjects entirely, I got under the van this morning -- before
it started to snow -- and cleaned off the bolts that hold the tin to the
underside of the L head. Dang but the outer bolts are mighty close to
the exhaust flanges. Looks like close work to get them bolts out. Or am
I just imagining this? (have not yet applied a wrench, waiting for
slightly warmer temps than the present 42F.)

Sigh. And here I am wishing that I had a fan on my little engine oil
"radiator." tencentlife had no recommendations for a suitable blower for
the thing. I'll need to poke around the Internets to find something I
can cable-tie to the thing, run a wire up front to a manual switch.

Uh, yeah, I would hacking that thing up that with caution.
On my van, the cleanest approach would probably be to unclamp the ATF
cooler hoses from the underside of the fancy aluminum "rare part"
replacement and plug the holes directly, but that looks complicated when
compared with cutting and plugging the hoses where I can reach them.

LOL -- it tries a man's ingenuity, that's for sure!
And there are so many unanswered questions. For example -- the little
electronic idle stabilizer box on the left side of the engine. I know
what it does for a living, but I have no idea how it does it . . . I
mean, what is it using for a "clock" to compare the engine rpms to to
determine if the engine is slowing down? Three wires in, three wires
out. Bypassable. David Beierl -- you're our only hope!
