I had to get my leaky heads fixed the first year I had this van.
Don't feel bad at all.
Head gasket repair on 'most cars' is something that you shouldn't normally
have to do .
If you half take care of most cars ..
they'll only rarely need head gaskets.
And most of the time it's due to neglect.
waterboxers on the other hand...
no amount of using blue coolant blessed by the Pope or whatever ..
no matter how carefully you take care of one..
the head gakset design is a pure joke, and can't really last that long.
and to people who say .......'I've got 230,000 miles on my waterboxer, heads
have never been off" ......
I totally cringe because the amount of corrosion that has built up over that
time ...
makes it highly likely the heads will be pitted at the outer rubber gasket
surface..
that the studs may be corroded and want to bust off at the bottom..
that the nuts will be very stuck at the top of the studs etc...
so it's actually smart and proactive do to head gaskets on waterboxers about
every 80K miles or 8 years.
besides..the exhaust valves tend to leak a bit , especially on 2.1's after a
while.
When I get *any* .....
absolutely any............. waterboxer engine used, like in a van I ust
picked up, ..
unless it's obvious that it's a pretty fresh or reubilt engine ..
it automatically gets a valve job and new head gaskets.
actaully .........*all* used VW engines usually need the head gasket done,
pretty much.
