Just don't use plastic or PVC. They do have a great selection of brass including hose barbs. Copper tube with the end crimped and soldered also makes great hose plugs.

Go to Home Depot and look at their selection of male plugs in the plumbing/irrigation department. Bring along your old hose to check fit.
