I had similar noise on my syncro after I bashed that transverse pipe that runs under the muffler. It was hitting the muffler brackets under certain conditions (engine load at mid rpm) and drove me nuts tracking it down. I fiddled with the muffler brackets and pried the (slightly bent) pipe away to fix it.
