How about heater/bypass caps? http://www.themainresource.com/?pogosty=shop.itemDetail

Use narrower or constant tension (spring) hose clamps or at least with a liner.

I've replaced the ATF cooler on Mellow Yellow (1.9L) with an external ATF cooler from Gowesty. The two coolant hoses that used to run to the cooler are no longer in use. Though Gowesty has you connecting the two unused hoses together, this is a silly idea, as it injects hot coolant into the radiator return hose. So I'll be plugging those two hoses with 5/8'' bolts secured with hose clamps.

Are your generic hardware store worm-drive clamps good enough for this?
