That's the right way to do it ..
get an vanagon instrument cluster with a tach ..
and that gets you the digital clock too.
just one warning ...there are a few variations in the wire positions on T14
, the connector at the instrument cluster. It's something like 80 to 82 is
one arrangement, 83 and 84 are together ..
85 is by itself, and 86 and up are all the same ..
*close to that* ...........
fortunately ...that connector opens up so you can change wire positions
easily.
So you can fit say, an 88 instrument cluster properly into your 85 van.
It's not hard to see in the Bentley wiring diagrams.
David B....
re your words below ..
I've only put a tach in one 85 that did not have a tach to start with ..
I don't know if they are all this way ..
but the green wire was in the front ..
and it was not in the electrical junction box. ( firewall box )
Anther vanagon guy I know says that non-tach 85's are like that ..
so .......the needed green wire may not be there in the black junction box.
It sure wasn't on the one I did.
Tach is a great addition. I drive by it constantly.
On ! ..to the original .poster .................
something you want to be aware of.
84's ( which can have a tach ) and 85's, have one oil pressure switch,
86's and later have two oil pressure switches on the engine.
IF you get an 86 or later instrument cluster...
you need to trick the Dynamic Oil Pressure System ..which in the instrument
cluster, so it will be happy without an OP switch for it to see. You just
need to ground the wire for that switch that you don't have.
