Subject: '89 or '90 Westy on CL in Bay Area
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

If anyone wants details in this camper, I've seen it before. IIRC he was asking $4800 and said it was a 1989 before. Now it's a 1990 and $5600.

He's left got the slider open because it's smash badly on the side. The C-pillar was collapsed and has holes from someone trying to fix it with a slide-hammer. Said canvas is perfect. Actually rotted on right side. Left rear corner was crunched too and slidehammer holes there too. Shallow dents on driver's side aft of B-pillar. The passenger side battery box was cut on the backside very poorly. He said he did that to get the battery out. Yikes! Total hack job. Floor has been cut to accept a single middle seat box. That's good or bad depending on what you want.

He said never overheated but coolant light was blinking in less than a minute. Waterpump appeared to have just been replaced. It seemed to idle well enough. Green coolant. Clunk when I shifted the auto trans to drive. Hissing from PS. Brake pedal low. Feels like it needs a master cylinder. I declined a test-drive.

Upholstery is worn and driver's seat is collapsed. You have to see the driver's in the household. Front seats had been redone in a non-factory fabric. It looks like crap and driver's seat is toast so best to replace.

Seller said he is getting 50 calls a day on it. He told me it was sold to some Canadian. Then called me the next day saying the guy broke his leg and can't make the trip. After looking at it, I deemed it to be a marginal buy. Told him I would give it some thought. I eventually decided against it. He said no problem because he knows it's worth $16,000 because he has been selling cars for a long time and that the whole block used to be filled with his cars. Just for laughs, I had a pal call a week later. The story was inconsistent.

It's very rough though it looks good in pics. The Seller is a obviously an unlicensed dealer. One of his stories is selling a '69 Mustang Mach 1 w/ Boss 428 for $80K and resold by the Buyer for $140K without doing a thing. The suggesting being but his Westy and resell for $16K after a good detail job. It might make a nice project for someone with the time and skill to do the work themselves. Too rough IMHO. The camper parts are too crusty around the edges if you were to part it out.

If it sounds like it's for you, here's the CL ad. Don't expect this puppy to drive cross country without some mechanical attention. Pmail me before you decide to fly don't here to fetch it.;-)
