re The problem is that there seems to have been a felt with grease that was not installed when they replaced the clutch and the lubrication dried up. "

There is a felt dust seal for the pilot bearing in waterboxer vanagons. The felt is not a sourer of lubricant, it' just keeps clutch dust out of the pilot bearing's small rollers. I suppose it helps keep grease in the pilot brg too, but I'd say the main function is to keep clutch dust out of the pilot bearing little rollers.

I find those felt seals missing commonly ...and clutch dust will eat out the pilot bearing in a couple of years without it being in place. Though it doesn't always cause failure to disengage cleanly when the pilot bearing rollers are just rusty dust remaining.

I had a similar problem not long ago. The part of the transmission shaft that goes into the fly wheel froze to the flywheel and was effectively rendering the clutch useless. My mechanic dropped the transmission lubed the shaft and flywheel and all fixed. The problem is that there seems to have been a felt with grease that was not installed when they replaced the clutch and the lubrication dried up. Cheers

Looking for some wisdom. My 91 stock manual, I can not get it to engage in any gear while to motor is running. If I start it with the clutch to the floor and in 1st it acts like its engage (wants to jump forward). I have check the master and slave clutch cylinders and they are not leaking and seem to move when the clutch is pushed down. Seems that with the motor running makes it not want to go into any gears and the motor off goes easily into all the gears? What is different when running or not? Thanks for your help.
