Subject:      Question about using a GAS tank in a DIESEL application

I recently came by a very nice almost new still-has-the-paper-labels-in-it gas tank from a late model vanagon. My diesel vanagon needs a tank. Gnarlie on the diesel group sent me pictures of the diesel setup—its obvious that my metal filler tube is twice the diameter of the hole that is in my new tank. Scott on the diesel list (and this list) suggested that I use a filler tube made for the tank, which I have. He says that using the new style setup is way easier than using the old diesel setup when it comes installation time, which is another incentive to use this tank.

In order to use the filler tube with a diesel, I need to get rid of that metal restrictor and spring flap that at some point in the history of politico-automotive development had some purpose or another. In any event, it has to go if I am to use the setup with big old diesel pump nozzles.

Does anybody know how to get rid of the metal insert, the thing you are looking at when you remove the gas cap?
