That's funny, I was just looking at that yesterday. But on my 87 there is a plate inside the mount, so the screw on the end of the knob pushes against the plate and that tightens against the table leg. So I couldn't figure out how to make it work.

My most appreciated thing is fixing the cruise control. No more sore knee or ankle on long trips, and now I'm not watching the speedo constantly.
