To add to this thread - I have given some thought to where to mount some external objects on my westy, including a ham radio antenna or at least a mount for stationary use at a campsite. Other things like bike racks, gas can, maybe a ladder or such to get up top. It seemed to me that the vanagon was designed to be pretty efficient, because even most all of the surfaces of the body have designated purposes. Very few spots where something else could easily/functionally go that isn't already there.
