Even the flexible hose replacements can, under bad circumstances, be
ruined.
I had a set that came unattached too the body and swang down, rubbing on the
drive axle (right rear). By the time i caught it, it had worn through the
line and my "lifetime replacement part" was ruined.

I've thus had no power steering for 4 years now, and I really couldn't care
less (it's a 2wd) but every year my inspection station tries to fail me for
not having power steering on a car that came with it from the factory. I
constantly tell them "thats ridiculous. It drives fine and they sold these
without PS" and they let me go.

Anyway, anything can wear out.
