You show me a dedicated GPS unit with dual-mode (city door-to-door routing & backcountry bearing/distance to waypoints with topo display) for under $250 and I'll think about it. Only one I could find is the Nuvi 500 and it's not a real peach, according to reviews.

Pls see thread "Free Topo Map Sources," starting May 10, and Jim Felder's and my exchange on May 12.

With this right between the clock and speedo, I not only have access to a superior non-city mapping app, I don't need to take my eyes any farther off the road than usual whereas a larger unit would need to be mounted farther away. I hate that -- I've run Topo USA on a laptop on the seat beside me before you want to talk about an accident waiting to happen.
