As a resident of Oregon where it is against the law to use a handheld phone when driving, I already don't use it when driving.

As a bicyclist who is rightly terrified of giant SUVs piloted by oblivious drivers with cell phones plastered to their ears I am aware of the danger.

I use my cell phone safely.

Putting my phone there does not mean that I'll be picking it up and chatting on it. It's there to be a GPS for city and backcountry navigating. Even if I get one of my (rare) calls, when it rings I won't need to take my eyes off the road to see it, and it has a hands-free speakerphone function.

I'm not sure this thread needs to digress into a discussion of cell phone safety.
