next time I'm working on one, I disconnect the distributor, and see if ecu still runs the fuel pump for a few seconds when you turn the key on. I suspect it will. it's to pre-pressuring the fuel rail, it's designed in on purpose.

almost all EFI cars pre-run their fuel pump .. either by the wbxr method .. or during starter cranking, energized by the 'start' signal from the ign switch ( not vanagons though ) .
