Reversing direction of half the coils may (or may not) make things
easier.  At the beginning the reversed half may be tighter.  But I've
routinely re-wound all my coil-cords ever since about a hundred years
ago I bought a little camera flash cord that came that way.  It had a
little tag tied on at the reversing point, saying "We meant
this...watch what happens when you stretch the cord and you'll see
it's better."  I saw and became a believer.
