not quite true.. 2.1 wbxr 2WD vanagons have a plastic t-stat housing with a clip-in Temp Sensor II, yes.

syncro vanagons have al all aluminum t-stat housing, with a screw-in Temp Sensor II, identical to the one on the 1.9 wbxr.
