Rust demons II- The Curse of the hinge pins Remember the center hinge part, with the pin rusted in? Well, I decided to drill them out before my next auto body class. As I lay the side gate upon the wood on the bed of my Doka, I remembered when I got this olde Sears drill from their rebuilt department before my first son was born. Now he has a daughter and two sons, and this drill and I have done a lot of jobs through the years. I started drilling out the first pin but had to keep changing bits as they were a bit older than my drill. Actually, my father gave me the whole pile of bits with just a hint of an evil glint in his eye, now that I recall. Anyway, after pressing the bit home, I decided to persevere even though smoke started pouring from the drill casing. I was outside, downwind from the smoke, and hey, I’m a guy. When I started seeing sparks through the smoke and the housing I unplugged the drill and lay it in the grass until it appeared safe. Then my wife, always a clear thinker when she saw beside the driveway smoke lazily rising from the grass like the ethereal spirit of the dead drill, marched me into her car and off we went to get some new hardware. I am now the proud possessor of a new ½ inch hammer/drill with plenty of muscle, a new set of self-centering wood bits, and a set of metal drilling bits for my Hansen drill index. I spared no expense as it wasn’t even my money; it’s the kid’s inheritance! And to follow dad’s example, I think I will give that big pile of dad’s olde bits to my youngest son. Don’t you just love family traditions! ed, olde and crively in VA |
