redone. A local shop will remove engine and replace gasket for me for
$700."
Be careful on this.
I just went through the *exact* thing with a very rusty 'good used' AAZ
engine.
The outside of the engine was horribly rusty ..
and by the insides of the cooling system the coolant had never ever been
changed in the engine's life.
The outside rust manifested itself in the worst way ..
with a 'rocking' t-belt sprocket on the crank nose. That was fixed by
sending the crank out to have the nose of it updated to TDI style. Which
meant honing the bore, new rings, new rod and main bearings, new stretch
fasteners, etc.
But that almost wasn't the worse part ....
.
Those headgaskets ..the all steel ones....darn rugged material. They don't
really deteriorate much that I've seen ...but ...
the top of the block .......severe pitting. Like the real repair is to
take the bare block and have it decked ..
and then you start thinking about what thickness head gasket you'll need
next ..
and if there is a right head gasket for that particular block and pistons.
If it already required a 3 notch head gasket and your're going to take some
off the top of the block ..
machine shop said the minimum they can do is about 4 thousandths ..
That means you could get into a situation where you can't really get the
right head gasket.
so it can turn into far more than a simple head gasket job.
So ..........some 'rust on the side of the block' ......on a running 'good
used' engine ..
turned into an entire near full rebuild. We kept the stock pistons and
wrist pins , and didn't rebuild the rods ...but everything else had to be
done..fix crank nose , polish crank journals, vavle and head work etc.
It's runnin' great now !
but ...been a real saga on what was sold as a 'good running AAZ engine'.
just sayin' be careful is all.
I'm quite sure that crank t-belt sprocket would have blown off there or
failed if left as it was ..which blows the engine of course.
This is the first time I've had a problem with a 1.9 NA or AAZ crank
sprocket , but I hear it's a weak spot ..
and they are commonly upgraded to TDI specs there..
and ....this totally 'gets me' ...
I was completely shocked to see that the t-belt sprocket is just bolted to
that flat face of the nose of the crankshaft.......the sprocket does not
reach down over the end of the crank at all ( well, about 1/4 inch , which
is nothing ) . It's insane they made such a weak design on a totally
critical part.
that one spot has been upgraded or change throughout the history VW
diesels.....there are two styles in 1.6 that I know of , then the 1Y, AAZ
style,
after the AAZ there is TDI style ..
on the next engine , the ALH ...the stretch bolt there gets upgraded to
...don't know if the bolt is different ..but the tightening specs are 'more'
. Sure wish they wouldn't done it bomber in the first place !
what vw diesel fun !
