It's good to read about people's experiences with Vanagon Stereos. Some of you know that I run an absurd stereo in the Stretch. http://www.evcl.com/vw/**InteriorStereo/Frame.html<http://www.evcl.com/vw/InteriorStereo/Frame.html>

Concerning speakers, I have been very happy with the Eclipse 8243 4" speakers in the original locations, but those are very old and now it looks like the similar ones are called SE8243. I suspect there are many new good options these days. My understanding is that a 4" speaker never will provide low frequencies, so I would look to add at least an 8" subwoofer to the mix.

I am generally not very happy with the high end head units. I find that after a few hours of dusty washboard the expensive ones CD players fail while the cheap $100 ones from Autozone keep working. So my challenge is to get the features that I want in a cheap head unit. I'm currently running one that will drive a iPod or iPhone directly, but I find the interface for the ipod is less than ideal.

Now that I'm doing most of my music on my iPhone, I have a new wish list for a head unit. I'd like it to have:

Made by anyone other than Sony, Real volume control knob, (not a fan of up down buttons), Remote control, (The Stretch needs it in back!) Bluetooth handsfree for phone, Bluetooth stereo input from the phone (so I don't need to plug in a cable)

I think the last feature is one of the harder ones to find. If anyone knows of a good fit, I'd love to hear about it. -- -Otmar- Corvallis Oregon 82/86 Stretch Vanagon Westfalia 5 speed TDI .
