Subject: CV replacement questions
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252

Hello list,

I have been lurking on the list for about three years and find the information to be complete and thorough most times. Love the light touch moderators have (I can almost hear them sigh every now and again….).

I am replacing the, um, how shall I say this? substandard CV joint replacements that started clicking once I bought my 1990 2.1L Wasserboxer AUTOMATIC campmobile and drove it about 2000 miles.

Sigh. I replaced with chinese axles (never do this!!) and the boots are cracking already in less than two years and 10,000 miles. Also, the axles and thinner and I am in the middle of a Bostig conversion. So back to OEM from Bus Depot (Nice!). CVs seem the right size, but, hmmm. The boots that go over the axles seem a bit small. Axle diameter is 1.073" for the left or driver's side and 1.125" on the longer, right, or passenger's side. 0.815" is unstretched rubber boot axle side inside diameter. Will these fit?And thus the question:

Do boots differ between manual and automatic axles? I already know that the axles are different lengths and (maybe) diameter.

Somebody got some information out there?

And another question for off line is, how to search the archives? Any quick suggestions to get me started? I am looking for the recent post of CV joint orientation.
