Some of the newer drills have brake built-in to stop it "right now".

"I am now the proud possessor of a new ½ inch hammer/drill with plenty of muscle, "

You have the new drill. Now, be extrememly careful with it. You won't believe how much torque this thing has, especially when you want it to stop turning RIGHT NOW and it wants to wind down slowly to a halt. Gives that drill plenty of time to hurt you in the execution of its duties.

I would even go so far as to unplug the power cord when you are using the chuck key to change bits. If you happen to depress the trigger with that key engaged you could lose a finger or two. At the very least you will teach any bystanders lots of colorful new language.

Rust demons II- The Curse of the hinge pins Remember the center hinge part, with the pin rusted in? Well, I decided to drill them out before my next auto body class. As I lay the side gate upon the wood on the bed of my Doka, I remembered when I got this olde Sears drill from their rebuilt department before my first son was born. Now he has a daughter and two sons, and this drill and I have done a lot of jobs through the years.
