Hi Ed !

You'll probably learn this in your class but getting the upper hand on rust goes something like this:

Get down to bare metal wherever possible. Pickle the exposed metal (I use Piclex 'cause you can paint over it without a water rinse). Apply a few coats of Por-15 followed by a few coats of Por TieCoat. Fill, feather, prime and finish. This usually buys a few years ;-)
