I installed a shutoff valve. Fan not withstanding, heat is obviously controlled via flaps in heat exchange box. Not the best arrangement IMO. Especially if the flaps in the box seal poorly. As per Jakes comment, I shunted in a hi temp ball valve. 28 Kb image: http://tinyurl.com/67jp97o Obviously near/at engine bay is a better location! Valve has barbed nipples. (used with PEX pipe) Hoses seal, having just enough purchase but as Jake suggests, sweating copper bits in would be best though one would obviously use a different valve than the one I show. If I were to do it again (install an entire cooling system < grin > ) I'd buy a new part, bench checking it for leaks first. Neil.
