Copper Crush Washers cost next to nothing. I'm not so so much of a cheep tightwad to re-use something that is supposed to be replaced. I always have a bag of a couple of dozen to use on my Vanagons, 411 Wagon and the 914 (or a friend's Bug, Ghia, etc.). Reused Crush Washers leak in my experience. :) -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" 75 914 1.8 "Nancy" Full Timing Since March 1999 oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com *********************************** On Thu, Jun 23, 2011 at 7:15 PM, Don Hanson <dhanson928@gmail.com> wrote: > >   I re-use the copper washers.  If you are really anal you can anneal the > thing by heating it with a propane torch or use your Westie stove burner. > Supposedly, that make the thing 'crushable' again. > >   My current van has the diesel oil drain plug...Can't say as I can figure > out why they made that one...complicated and not so safe, I am told by the > diesel heads on some of the lists..they come loose or crack the cast pan, I > am told, unless you do everything just right every time.  I'd rather have > just the normal plug.. >
