Though implied, I meant:

"I installed a shutoff valve. In my Vanagon, fan not withstanding...... " Re: flaps, was suggesting that if one had poor flap seals, a shut off valve would be pretty much useless. IMO. :)

Not *too* hard to get at, but a poor location. As I noted, the engine bay area is better. That said, I rebuilt my heat exchange box during engine swap process. It seals quite well so I can shut off air flow. I will do things differently (read: better) on my next air to water cooled swap. (next? Ha ha ha)

In my case, installing the Home Depot shutoff valve was all part of the engine swap process. The *new* Vanagon valve leaked from day one.

In terms of valve location, I debated which heater core hoses to use. Diesel or WBX. The former would have put the valve in the cab. Installing the valve where I did was an oversight for sure. I had a lot on my mind during that time. :)
